PCs Before CMOS

Older PCs did not have CMOS chips to maintain system settings. These systems relied on dip switches and jumpers. By setting these in a certain combination, you could manually "set" your system settings. The PC would then check these settings when booting and be able to go merrily on its way.

As PCs became more sophisticated, the size of the system settings information grew. This led to the use of the CMOS chip.
